About Us

Two women are engaged in conversation at a professional event, with others in the background.

We got tired of watching smart organizations break under the weight of their own growth.

So we built something different.

The Collective exists because we've seen what happens when capable leaders get promoted into roles they weren't equipped for. When the culture that worked at 20 people starts cracking at 200. When everyone keeps saying "we need to be more strategic" but nobody's telling you how.

We've also seen what doesn't work: consultants who diagnose problems and disappear. Workshops that inspire for 48 hours and change nothing. "Culture initiatives" that produce posters, not progress.

We're a partnership — embedded, long-term, and built to last until the change actually sticks.

What we know to be true

Leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room or having the fanciest credentials.

It's about building the capacity to hold hard things — decisions, conversations, accountability — without flinching. It's about growing people up so the work doesn't depend on one person carrying everything.

Strategy without soul is empty. You can optimize systems all day, but if you're treating humans like resources, you'll lose your best people and wonder why.

Clarity doesn't happen by accident. Alignment is designed, built, and maintained. "Accidental culture" is just chaos wearing a hoodie.

The truth is an act of care. We'll tell you what nobody else will — not to burn it down, but to build something better.

Development should outlast the engagement. We measure success by whether you can thrive without us. We're catalysts, not crutches.

Our approach

The goal is always independence. We're here to make you powerful without us.

  • Number one

    Clarify

    Understand what's really happening.

Before we build anything, we listen. We conduct leadership discovery sessions, cultural assessments, and team strengths mapping to surface what's working, what's stuck, and what nobody's saying out loud.

This isn't a checkbox audit. It's a diagnostic that gives us — and you — a clear baseline to work from.

  • Number two

    Craft

Design what needs to be built.

With clarity in hand, we get to work. This is where coaching, facilitation, and systems design come together. We work with your leaders one-on-one. We facilitate the conversations your team has been avoiding. We build the communication rhythms and accountability structures that make alignment possible.

This phase is hands-on, embedded, and adaptive. We adjust as priorities shift — because real organizations don't sit still.

  • Number three

    Cultivate

    Make the change stick.

Development that disappears after a workshop isn't development. It's theater. We stay in the system long enough to hardwire new ways of working into your culture. We facilitate strategic planning sessions. We provide ongoing advisory support.

We build internal capability so your leaders can carry this forward without us.

Meet us

We're Renita Joyce Smith and Tracy Reneé Williams.

Between us, we've spent four decades doing this work — inside organizations and alongside them. We've seen what breaks when companies scale without intention, and we've learned what it actually takes to build leadership capacity that lasts.

We started The Collective because we wanted to work differently. Not as vendors. Not as drive-by consultants. As embedded partners who tell the truth, stay in the room, and don't leave until the work is done.

RENITA JOYCE SMITH

Co-Founder & Resident Leadership Partner

Renita brings two decades in management consulting and strategy development, with a track record of building leadership capacity inside Fortune 500 organizations.

She's built leadership pipelines inside complex organizations, navigated executive politics, and learned what it takes to develop leaders at scale when you're part of the system yourself. She knows what it's like to sit in the room where decisions get made — and what it's like to watch good strategy die in translation between the C-suite and the front lines.

Renita doesn't just talk about leadership — she builds it. She's the person who makes the room honest, names the thing no one else will say, and then helps the team figure out what to do about it. She creates environments where authenticity and accountability aren't competing values — they're the same thing.

TRACY RENEÉ WILLIAMS

Co-Founder & Resident Leadership Partner

Tracy Reneé Williams has spent two decades in rooms where smart people talk past each other and call it collaboration; and she's built a career out of helping them stop. As founder of TraComm Development Group, she's done this work across global non-profits, technology ventures, government, higher education, and oil and gas, in more than 10 countries.

Her gift is asking the question that changes the conversation. Whether she's running a workshop, coaching an executive, or speaking from a stage, the humor and the directness show up right alongside the strategy. Tracy won't let leaders hide behind jargon or comfort. She meets them where they are — then she moves them toward where they need to be.

She brings a deep bench of assessment tools: MBTI, SDI, Equilibria E-Colors, CoreClarity, and CliftonStrengths, and she knows how to use them for real development. She also created her own: SpeakEA²SY, a communication assessment built on the belief that how you speak is how you lead.

At The Collective, her work centers on inclusion and coaching that crosses cultural and organizational lines — preparing leaders to build workplaces where people can actually do their best work. Not perform it. Do it.

Why two of us?

We show up together because leadership development isn't one-dimensional.

Renita brings the builder's lens — she's lived inside the complexity of organizational politics, built programs from the inside, and knows what it takes to sustain change when you're part of the system.

Tracy brings the coach's lens — she's worked across industries and continents, coached hundreds of executives, facilitated hard conversations, and sees the patterns that people inside organizations are too close to notice.

Together, we cover more ground. We challenge each other. We bring more energy and range to every room we're in.

Whether we're embedded with your leadership team for twelve months or delivering a keynote at your annual conference, you get four decades of experience from two perspectives — and neither of us is going to tell you what you want to hear just to keep you comfortable.

WE'D RATHER PARTNER WITH FEWER ORGANIZATIONS AND GO DEEP THAN SPREAD OURSELVES THIN

If you're looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear, we're not it. But if you want a partner who will get inside the system, tell the truth with care, and stay until your leaders can carry the work forward — let's talk.
